Vincent Boucher · MONTREAL.AI / QUEBEC.AI · Research edition 1.2.0
Research synthesis, an executable finite case, and reproducible calculations with stated inputs. Frontier-model gains and real commercial results remain to be established.
At a glance
The most valuable answer may begin with what is missing.
Ask an AI to summarize a book, and a fluent answer can conceal a crucial omission. Give another AI the book and ask it to find a consequential gap. It may produce something you can check: a missing argument, an overlooked qualification, a conclusion the source does not support.
Now extend that question to an invention or a business. Which missing measurement, capability, agreement, or way of working prevents a valuable outcome? A verified objection can become a construction brief.
The proposed loop checks the criticism, builds or obtains the missing means, tests the complete arrangement, and examines whether the result helps a different successor. As intelligence advances, it revisits obstacles that may have become removable.
One executable case · stated finite scope
What works today can discard what tomorrow needs.
Two readings. A shared record. A family of questions the record must answer correctly. This authored example shows how a verified omission becomes a construction target—and why the resulting capability needs fresh tests when the task changes.
01 · Find the missing distinction
Same average. Different verdict.
Suppose every reading must be at most 90. A mean-only record cannot distinguish these traces, even though the correct verdicts differ.

Retaining the maximum supplies the missing distinction for the declared threshold-query family. An ordinary maximum calculation achieves the same result.
02 · Challenge what survives
Same maximum. A new blind spot.
The next task asks whether every reading lies within an interval. The maximum alone cannot reveal a reading below its lower bound.
A refined record with six labels answers the declared interval family. One construction retains the mean plus a flag separating the ambiguous mean-80 cases; conventional minimum/maximum records also succeed.
Both constructions need the raw readings before compression. They cannot reconstruct discarded information from old summaries. What should be retained before that information is lost?

A label is a distinguishable record value. One fixed representation must support the whole stated query family. These counts are not bytes, tokens, or measured costs. The finite case tests representations and their limits; conventional constructions tie. No frontier model was tested and no industrial qualification is established.
All choices below meet today’s requirement. A possible future request needs a distinction the compact maximum has lost: for example, maximum 80 cannot distinguish (60, 80) from (80, 80) when asked whether both readings are 80. Compare keeping a richer record, preserving source access, and ordinary reconstruction.
Stated inputs: a correct future decision yields 20 net units before extra source costs. Keeping the richer record costs 4 now; securing access to the exact original source costs 2 now. These are supplied values, not measured prices or costs inferred from label counts.
The default model requires preserving the source or access before it can be lost. If the same route can really be bought later, include it: try ordinary access first, then buy the guaranteed route only if needed and worthwhile.

Compact record
If the same guaranteed access can be bought after arrival, the stronger ordinary policy first tries ordinary access and purchases only when needed. At p = 50%, q = 25%, r = 1, this policy earns 8.75 expected units and wins the expanded comparison.
Preserve a usable path to tomorrow’s question. Keeping useful possibilities may mean retaining a richer record, preserving access, or relying on ordinary reconstruction. Reconsider the choice when capabilities and costs change.
What the comparison assumes—and how to inspect it
The future purpose is specified and requires a distinction absent from the compact record. p is its chance of arrival, not the fraction of arbitrary interval queries that happen to need more information. The request is optional; declining it leaves zero future value.
A correct accepted decision has the same value whether its answer is positive or negative. Fixed costs common to every route cancel; the future value 20 is net of common fulfillment costs. r includes all additional source, reconstruction, and qualification costs. Values shown are incremental expected net value, not revenue or realized profit.
The source is the exact original version, with required permission and semantics. q is ordinary access availability conditional on arrival, observed before spending r. Arrival and availability reveal no hidden answer information. Secured access is guaranteed within this supplied model; it does not recover discarded data by inference.
Current resources already cover common work and every modeled incremental route outlay before any future payoff. The 4-unit retention cost and 2-unit advance access cost are paid now; later reconstruction is paid only when available and worthwhile. This fully funded comparison is separate from the refund illustration. Costs are authored, not a conversion from three or six labels.
With late purchase enabled, the ordinary policy uses ordinary access first. Only when it is absent does the policy consider paying 2 plus r for the same source. This is a different available menu, and a necessary comparator whenever those terms are feasible.
These policies and inputs define the comparison. A different complete policy may win. Ordinary calculations reproduce the results; no model discovered these probabilities, and no frontier-model advantage or business outcome is measured.
Try this on your own work: name one valuable later question, the distinction it needs, and the full cost of retaining or lawfully reacquiring it. Then ask what change in access, value, or cost would reverse your choice.
Three questions that open the search
Challenge the answer. Challenge the possibilities. Challenge the test.
Different questions expose different gaps. Each useful challenge must connect to evidence and a decision it could change.
01 · Failure challenger
What could break this?
“Which consequential claim fails, and where is the evidence?”
Find an unsupported assumption, missing dependency, or reproducible counterexample. Check the objection before changing a working solution.
02 · Possibility challenger
What could we be missing?
“Which better complete route have we failed to consider?”
Propose a constructive alternative: a new capability, a different arrangement, or an existing method that already delivers the outcome.
03 · Instrument challenger
What would let us know?
“Which observation could distinguish the competing explanations?”
Design an informative test, source representation, or measurement. Validate an improved evaluator independently before relying on its verdict.
An omission matters only when it changes the authorized outcome or decision. Agreement among critics does not establish truth; an unsuccessful search for a defect does not establish completeness.
From objection to opportunity
Try one Missing Move.
Start with one candidate, its original evidence, and a clear statement of what would count as success. Follow these six steps. A supported decision to keep the candidate or stop is a valid result.
Propose
Write the outcome, hard requirements, permitted resources, and best current route.
Challenge
Ask for the strongest supported gap and why it could change the decision. Allow “none established.”
Verify
Check the original source or run the witness. Distinguish a material finding from an immaterial, false, or unresolved objection.
Construct
Build or obtain the simplest adequate response. Compare a strong existing alternative and a test that could reject your proposal.
Deliver
Check acceptance, voluntary terms, complete costs, and cash before obligations fall due. Record what actually happened.
Compound
Test what helps the next opportunity. Revalidate retained means on different work; evaluate better discovery separately.
A filled record: from the trace discrepancy to a tested successor
1 · Propose
Use one shared record to answer every threshold question in the declared primary family for two readings. Preserve the required verdicts and the source identity.
2 · Challenge
The traces (60, 100) and (80, 80) both have mean 80. At a threshold of 90, one fails and the other passes. A mean-only representation loses a consequential distinction.
3 · Verify
Inspect the raw readings and the acceptance rule. The witness refutes the mean-only claim. The complete primary check contains 36 trace/query pairs; its scope is that finite family.
4 · Construct
Retain the maximum for the primary family and compare ordinary maximum computation. Both succeed. Keep raw evidence available when later questions may require a different representation.
5 · Deliver
Check the productive arrangement separately. In the supplied economic illustration, 50 funds the deposit-backed success path, but 90 is needed if the full refund branch must also remain solvent. No counterparties or commercial receipts were observed.
6 · Compound
The changed interval task defeats the maximum-only record. Rebuild from raw readings, then check all 54 successor trace/query pairs. A six-label refinement and conventional minimum/maximum construction succeed. This establishes the declared revalidation result, not improved autonomous discovery.
For your own case, record the source, decisive check, complete alternative, costs, and limits of reuse. A verified diagnosis does not automatically validate its proposed repair.
The loop renews: a relevant new capability can return an unresolved obstacle to the search. A growing archive alone is not evidence of a better inventor.
Frontier Replay
The frontier moves. Reopen the right question.
A new model or scientific advance can change what is feasible. Replay asks whether a specific change removes a specific obstacle, while leaving room to discover opportunities that never entered the backlog.
What changed? Verify access, usable capability, cost, reliability, and scope.
What becomes possible? Connect the change to a valuable outcome and its missing means.
Does the complete route hold up? Compare strong alternatives, test the result, and check sustainable participation and funding.
Ambition with a checkable boundary
Inspect the mechanism. Keep the claims distinct.
The paper combines a research synthesis, an executable finite case, and reproducible calculations with stated inputs. These make the reasoning inspectable; their assumptions and comparison limits remain part of the result.
